The 2013 National Assessment of Educational Progress (NAEP) results are in and show Virginia’s incoming fourth graders continue to improve in reading.

According to the 2013 NAEP results:

  • 43% of Virginia fourth-graders scored at or above proficient reading levels; a 4% improvement from 39% in 2011.

Virginia’s average score exceeded the nation’s average score by 8 points, ranking Virginia 5th nationally.

We talk a lot about the importance of third grade reading and its impact on future academic success.  Many children who struggle with reading in 3rd grade continue to struggle in school—greatly reducing their chances of finishing high school, attending college, or contributing to the local and state economy.

By 4th grade, rather than learning to read, children are reading to learn.  If they’re unable to read at grade level, they continue to fall further and further behind.

While there is still room for improvement, these latest results from NAEP show that Virginia continues to make progress!
