ACT just released a new study indicating just how far off-track students are when it comes to college preparedness.
The results?
- Researchers examined multiple cohorts of eighth-grade students whose EXPLORE (a test administered by ACT) scores were “Far Off Track” and were more than one standard deviation below Benchmark.
- Of those deemed “Far Off Track”, only 10% or fewer attained ACT College Readiness Benchmarks by 12th grade.
- They also examined results from 4th grade and discovered similar results. The “Far Off Track” 4th graders had a 10% or lower chance of reaching the College Readiness Benchmark by 8th grade.
Children who start behind, tend to stay behind. It’s critical we understand the just how difficult it is to close these gaps once they begin. The more difficult and time-consuming it is to close these gaps, the more important it is we start early.
