There’s a new nonprofit sweeping the nation with one clear goal: help Americans access technology through Digital Literacy training, discounted high-speed Internet, and low-cost computers. Connect2Compete, which launched this past March, is aimed at reaching an estimated 100 million Americans without home broadband Internet access, including tens of millions of students. Did you know that currently, 1 in 5 Americans don’t use the Internet?
In a recent USA Today article, CEO Zach Leverenz said, “The costs of the digital divide are clear and documented. Our goal is to help overcome the barriers to adoption, including lack of perceived relevancy, high costs and the need for basic digital literacy skills, in order to ensure that all Americans have the tools they need to compete in the digital economy, regardless of age, race, geography, income or education level.”
Here in Virginia, both Cox and Comcast are participants. Families who live in an area covered by the providers and whose children qualify for free or reduced lunch through the National School Lunch Program are eligible. Click here to check out all eligibility requirements.
